Book Voyagers – Choose Kind

Tuesdays, May 22 and 29, 6:30pm
Activity Room

Join us for a discussion series designed to encourage participants to think of the many ways people choose to be kind –whether the kindness is between one student and another, between an adult and a child, or between a child and an adult. Each book in the series is about a young person facing challenges – physical, social or developmental – that set them apart from their classmates. How their classmates treat them is as important as how they view themselves.

The discussion books include:
5/1: El Deafo by CeCe Bell
5/8: One for the Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt
5/15: Cancelled
5/22: Wonder by R.J. Palacio
5/29: Rules by Cynthia Lord

For students in grades 3 - 6 (ages 9 - 13).
Registration required to receive free copies of the books.
Co-sponsored by the Friends of the Russell Library and CT Humanities.

Drag Queen Story Hour—Pride Celebration with Mia!

Saturday, June 2, @11:00am
Activity Room

Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) is just what it sounds like—drag queens reading stories to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores. DQSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models. In spaces such as these, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where people can present as they wish, where dress up is real. Join us for Russell Library's first ever DQSH featuring one of our local stars, Mia! DQSH was created by Michelle Tea and RADAR Productions in San Francisco. DQSH events occur regularly in SF, NY, and LA. For more information on DQSH, visit DragQueenStoryHour.org.

On the River: A Community Art Project

Saturday, June 16, @10:30am

In this hands-on art class, participants will work together to create a mural based on a well-known piece of art. Each person or small group will get one to three 12'' x 12'' paper squares with a section of the painting. They will be asked to replicate the lines, shapes, and general composition of the sample square using any materials, colors, or style that they wish. Materials will be provided. Artists are encouraged to bring in their favorite supplies if they’d like. As they finish, they will place their square on the wall based on the number on the back. The combined squares will reveal the piece of art chosen for the class.
This project is ideal for individuals interested in making art, and families with children in grades 1 and up (ages 6 +). Siblings welcome!
Registration suggested; drop-ins accepted if there’s room. Please sign up on line or call the Information Desk at 860-347-2520.
